UPSTREAM works with businesses, public interest groups, scientists, policy makers and everyday people on practical solutions to fix our unsustainable production and consumption systems.
The solutions we advocate for work to shift our “Take, Make, Waste” cradle-to-grave production and consumption system into a “cradle-to-cradle” system, ensuring products are designed with safe, sustainable materials and continuously reused or recycled into the products of tomorrow. Implementing these solutions will dramatically reduce waste and the need for virgin natural resources, reduce toxic pollution and energy use, save taxpayer money, and create entrepreneurial opportunities, American jobs and local economic development.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – Product Stewardship and Extended Producer Responsibility are systemic approaches to reduce the life-cycle environmental and societal impacts of products and packaging.
The Circular Economy – The Circular Economy is about making products and packaging with safe, sustainable materials that can be reutilized as either technical or biological inputs for new products.
Zero Waste – Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.
